Systematic Review vs Literature Review: What Is the Difference?

Understand how purpose, search methods, eligibility criteria, appraisal and synthesis distinguish systematic reviews from broader literature reviews.

The key difference is the level of methodological structure

A literature review is a broad term for synthesising existing knowledge. It may be used in an essay, dissertation chapter, research proposal or stand-alone paper. A systematic review is a specific research method designed to answer a focused question through a predefined, transparent and reproducible process. Both require critical thinking, but a systematic review places much stronger emphasis on documenting how evidence was located, selected, appraised and synthesised.

Literature reviews can serve several purposes

A narrative or critical literature review may map debates, compare theories, identify research gaps, develop a conceptual framework or justify a new study. Search methods should still be thoughtful and transparent, but the review may not attempt exhaustive retrieval. The writer has more flexibility to organise evidence around concepts, themes, chronology or theoretical arguments.

Systematic reviews require explicit eligibility and search methods

A systematic review normally specifies the population or problem, outcomes or phenomena, eligible study designs, publication limits and other criteria before screening begins. Searches are documented across named databases and supplementary sources. Screening decisions are recorded, commonly using a PRISMA flow diagram. The goal is to reduce avoidable selection bias and allow readers to understand how the final evidence base was produced.

Critical appraisal is not optional

Included studies are not automatically treated as equally trustworthy. A systematic review uses design-appropriate appraisal tools to assess methodological limitations or risk of bias. These judgements should influence interpretation. A polished synthesis that ignores the quality of its underlying studies can create false confidence.

Meta-analysis is optional, not automatic

A systematic review may include meta-analysis when multiple studies provide sufficiently comparable quantitative data. Meta-analysis combines estimates statistically and examines uncertainty and heterogeneity. When studies are too different in populations, outcomes, definitions or design, a structured narrative synthesis may be more defensible than forcing a pooled estimate.

Choose the review type from the question

If your purpose is to explain a field or build an argument for a dissertation chapter, a critical literature review may be enough. If you need a reproducible answer to a focused evidence question, a systematic review is more appropriate. Scoping reviews, rapid reviews and other evidence-synthesis designs serve different purposes, so the label should match the method actually used.
