Quantitative vs Qualitative Research: Differences, Examples and When to Use Each
Compare quantitative and qualitative research by question type, sampling, data collection, analysis, strengths and limitations.
The difference begins with the kind of question
Quantitative research is commonly used when the study needs numerical estimates, comparisons, associations or predictions. Qualitative research is commonly used when the aim is to understand experiences, meanings, processes or context in depth. The choice should follow the research question. A question asking “how many” or “is there an association” requires different evidence from a question asking “how do participants experience” or “why does this process occur.”
Data and sampling work differently
Quantitative studies often use structured measures and larger samples to estimate patterns in a population. Probability sampling strengthens generalisability when it is feasible. Qualitative studies normally use smaller, information-rich samples selected because participants have relevant experience. Saturation or information power may guide sample adequacy, but there is no universal interview number that applies to every study.
Analysis reflects the evidence type
Quantitative analysis may include descriptive statistics, group comparisons, correlation, regression or more advanced models. Qualitative analysis may use thematic analysis, framework analysis, content analysis, grounded theory procedures or other approaches. Software such as SPSS or R supports numerical analysis, while NVivo can help organise qualitative data. Software does not determine the methodology.
Strengths are linked to purpose
Quantitative methods can estimate prevalence, test hypotheses and quantify relationships with explicit uncertainty. Qualitative methods can reveal mechanisms, context, language and perspectives that structured measures may miss. Neither approach is automatically more rigorous. Rigour depends on design quality, measurement, sampling, transparency and interpretation.
Mixed methods requires integration
Mixed methods combines quantitative and qualitative evidence when the research problem genuinely benefits from both. It should not mean collecting two unrelated datasets. A mixed-methods design explains the sequence or priority of components and how the findings will be integrated—for example, using interviews to explain an unexpected statistical pattern.
Choose the method that answers the question
Do not select a method because it seems easier or because a preferred software package is available. Begin with the aim, identify the evidence needed, consider access and ethics, then choose the design that can realistically answer the question. Methodological alignment is more important than the label attached to the study.
